Diethylenetriamine (DETA) is an aliphatic ethylidene amine with two primary amino groups and one secondary amino group. DETA is a colorless or pale yellow transparent oily liquid with a pungent ammonia odor. It is soluble in water, acetone, benzene, ethanol, methanol, etc., sparingly soluble in n-heptane, and insoluble in ether. It is hygroscopic, readily absorbing moisture and carbon dioxide from the air. It is strongly alkaline and corrosive to copper and copper alloys. It forms a white fumes in the air.

Diethylenetriamine is mainly used as a solvent and organic synthesis intermediate in the production of gas purifiers (for CO2 removal), lubricating oil additives, emulsifiers, photographic chemicals, surfactants, fabric finishing agents, paper strengthening agents, aminocarboxyl complexing agents, ashless additives, metal chelating agents, dispersants in heavy metal hydrometallurgy and cyanide-free electroplating, brighteners, ion exchange resins, and polyamide resins, etc.
